Historic restaurant in London

"Rules" in London, England, is a historic restaurant that is considered the oldest in the city and has maintained an impressive tradition since its founding in 1798 by Thomas Rule. Originally opened as an oyster bar, it has evolved over more than two centuries into an institution known for its classic British cuisine. Throughout its history, which includes the reigns of ten monarchs, the restaurant has been owned by only four families, underscoring its consistency and unique character. Located in the heart of Covent Garden, it has established itself as a gathering place for writers, artists, actors, and other prominent figures, including luminaries like Charles Dickens, Evelyn Waugh, and Laurence Olivier. Today, it is a place that combines tradition and history with a touch of modern flair.

Traditional British cuisine in Covent Garden

The atmosphere at "Rules" is unique and reflects its long history. The interior is characterized by opulent, almost museum-like decor, with hundreds of drawings, paintings, and caricatures on the walls that have been collected over time, providing insight into London’s literary and theatrical past. Red velvet upholstery, dark wooden furniture, and antique details create an elegant yet cozy ambiance reminiscent of the Victorian era. Particularly noteworthy is the cocktail area on the upper floor known as the Winter Garden, which, with its lush decor and view of the city, is a popular spot for an aperitif. The restaurant follows a smart-casual dress code, with sportswear not permitted, and children under ten are not allowed in the evenings, which enhances the upscale atmosphere. The staff is known for their polite and attentive manner, although it can sometimes take a bit longer during busy times.

Best restaurants for game dishes

Culinary-wise, "Rules" represents the essence of traditional British cuisine with a special focus on game dishes sourced from its own Lartington Estate in the High Pennines—a region dubbed "England’s last wilderness." A highlight is the "Roast Red Leg Partridge," a succulent partridge that showcases the quality of the game meat served here with its tender texture and intense flavor. Also impressive is the "Steak and Kidney Pudding," a hearty pie filled with tender meat and rich gravy, served in a traditional suet pastry that perfectly captures British food culture. For fish lovers, the "Grilled Dover Sole" offers a delicate option that impresses with its buttery lightness and a fine hint of lemon. To conclude, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding," a warm, sweet dessert topped with a creamy caramel sauce, leaves a lasting impression. The dishes are characterized by their freshness and the care taken in preparation, with the restaurant proudly offering healthy alternatives such as low-fat game meat.

Cocktail bar in Winter Garden

The drink selection is equally remarkable, featuring an extensive wine list predominantly comprised of French wines that complement the dishes excellently. The cocktail area offers classics and original creations, such as the "Duchess of Cambridge," a refined mix of pink pepper gin, vodka, and Lillet, celebrated for its elegance. A traditional Afternoon Tea is also available, showcasing a selection of pastries and teas that celebrate British tea culture. The quality of the drinks is underscored by the expertise of the bar staff, led by renowned mixologist Brian Silva, solidifying the Winter Garden's reputation as one of the best cocktail bars in London.

Had a superb time, again. The team were so friendly and efficient, drinks and food top notch, and a lovely atmosphere shared with fellow diners. All around a great experience, still one of my favourite locations.

A wonderful restaurant that completely overturns the stereotypes Japanese people have. When converted to Japanese yen, it costs about 10,000 yen per person—around £50. 💷 素晴らしいお店❤️ 日本円に換算すると1人1万円くらいです。 50£くらい💷

Absolutely one of the best experiences I had in London so far. Very kind and prepared personnel, delicious food and wonderful location. We chose steamed alibut and roasted pork belly & seared scallop, everything absolutely tasteful and very good. Dessert with a vanilla baked cheesecake, the perfect closure for this perfect dinner. We will come back for sure next time in London.

The dinner and service were excellent. The steak and kidney pie was as delicious as expected and a generous portion of rabbit rillettes to start was equally good. The atmosphere is a bit of a step back in time, in a delightful way. The non-alcoholic menu was lacking.

Visited during Christmas time and somehow very luckily got a table within 20 minutes. Helpful and pleasant staff and tasty food, especially dessert. Not that many vegetarian options. Tasteful decorations. Recommended!

We had our friends from the states over and took them here to try British food… everyone had a great time and the food was delicious! The only reason I marked the food down by a star was due to the cocktails which were poor value for money. Thank you Sophie for the great service and crumble recommendation, it was excellent!

Feb 18th. Another excellent meal here with one of my daughters and her husband. The new menu is out and it all looks so good. End of Jan 2025. This has fast become my favourite restaurant, I've been here with my family about six times now and every single time has been a pleasure. The ambience is excellent, (especially at Christmas), the food amazing and the staff attentive and friendly. I would recommend the 2009 Lirac , one of the nicest wines available but I contacted the vineyard to see about buying some and there is no more stock so we will have to go through Rules stock instead. :-) For a lunchtime treat, a special occasion or visiting from abroad this is one of the nicest places to go. I took my daughter and her husband here as a treat and it was everything you expect. Quintessentially English eccentric at its finest. The staff were very friendly and attentive, the food was just wonderful and the ambience was brilliant. Back again tomorrow with my other daughter :-)
